π STARTUPS GROUNDSWELL
Could Steve Blank's Startup Principles Have Saved The Deal?
The energy in the room crackled. We were on the cusp of landing a mammoth deal β a contract with a huge corporation that could have catapulted our stealth startup into the big leagues.
Months of demos, late nights of coding, and gallons of coffee had led us here. The presentation went flawlessly, or so we thought. We answered every question, addressed every concern.
We practically waltzed out of the conference room, visions of sugarplum funding dancing in our heads.
Except, the deal never materialized. Weeks turned into months, our hopeful emails met with radio silence.
Dejected, I (this could be You as well ) called up a mentor, a seasoned entrepreneur who'd seen it all. As I recounted the story, his brow furrowed. "Did you truly understand their needs?" he asked.
βοΈ It was a question that hadn't crossed my mind in the frenzy of chasing the big fish.
He then mentioned an article by Steve Blank, a guru in the startup world, about the ruthlessness required when chasing deals.
A punch hit my gut as I read about "opportunity costs" and the dangers of demos with low probability of success.
We, in our blind ambition, had poured all our resources into this Goliath, neglecting other potential clients who might have been a better fit.
Blank's emphasis on "product-market fit" resonated deeply.
We'd focused on tailoring features to what we thought the corporation needed, neglecting to validate it with actual users within the company.
We built features on demand, a desperate attempt to win them over, instead of building a product with a clear value proposition.
The truth stung.
We'd been so caught up in the allure of the big deal that we'd lost sight of the fundamentals.
We'd strayed from the core users who genuinely needed our product, and in doing so, we'd missed the opportunity to build a strong foundation for our stealth startup.
The deal may have slipped through our fingers, but we revamped our sales process, prioritizing product-market fit with actual users.
We built a roadmap focused on understanding customer needs, not just chasing the biggest names. It wasn't easy, but slowly, we started landing deals with companies that were a perfect fit for us.
Our startup may not be a household name yet, but we're on the right track. We learned a harsh lesson, but a valuable one.
π€ Sometimes, the most attractive deal isn't the best one!
By prioritizing product-market fit and ruthlessly focusing on the right opportunities, we're building a sustainable future for us, one happy customer at a time.
